Just an old hippy here and a lapsed catholic. Although I don't really believe in organized religion or the divinity of the bible, trump is either the anti-christ or doing his best impression. Christian Nationalists, who are behind trumps worst ideas, are not christians nor true nationalists. Re-read the sermon on the mount and our Declaration of Independence and Constitution. Legislators represent the people of your states and districts not the sources of your campaign money. News media tell the truth. No spin, no propaganda. Democracy requires an informed public, honest debate and compromise.
Fred, I am a Christian and an evangelical one at that. I am neither a nut job Christian Nationalist, in fact just the opposite and absolutely believe in the separation of church and state, nor an end times lunatic who is always looking for the end of the world. HOWEVER, I am now frighteningly convinced as you are. “Trump is either the Antichrist or doing a very good imitation.” I am that frightened and that terrified watching supposedly “good people” and especially “good Christian people” continue to vote for and defend the most vile, cruel, corrupt, narcissistic, ignorant and immoral human being of my 72 year lifetime. This country has gone stark raving mad. Antichrist thinking literally helps me keep my sanity, if that makes any sense. Nothing else does. I am in shock at the evil around and inside my neighbors and friends. It “can happen here” and has……….

your writing is lovely, your thoughts are clear, and your presence here on Substack is courageous. I just subscribed and I hope you keep writing even though at first it can be very slow picking up readers. You deserve them and I hope they come your way.
I continue to wonder about this: approximately 70 million people voted for Trump. In addition to the question « Why did you vote for Trump? » I wonder what Trump supporters were finding so wrong about the state of the union? What made their lives so unbearable that they thought Biden or Harris would not be able to solve it? I think part of the answer is that the USA will not be able to elect a woman (of any race) for many years. I also think people don’t vote on the issues, they vote on appearances, and Trump appealed (or appeals) to this centuries-old gene in many Americans of lawlessness, independence, racism, and embracing theft (colonial imperialism). And finally, I do wonder if Elon Musk’s public and secret support of Trump and the Project 2025 people included electronic tampering of voting machines and results.
Again, what genuinely made the 70 million Trump voters feel that their lives and the country’s well-being would improve under his leadership? I am truly curious what these voters were experiencing -the negative, real impacts - in their daily lives that made them think Trump would make their lives better. The USA for sure needs/needed change (in, for example, improving infrastructure like a better train system, to be more on a par with Europe and China, among other countries; and improvements in health care, to make it affordable for all and hence a healthier country). But it feels like Trump voters, maybe without knowing it fully, voted for a dismantling of a federal government, among all the other things that feel so destructive now to the other 70 million who voted against him.
Your essay is simply your opinions and you no longer live in the United States, correct? Sounds like you fixed your own personal situation. Congratulations!
My first in a series of four posts begins with looking at what shaped the current president and the role models he chose. Series finishes with who was attracted to him and why.
It’s pretty simple, Harris would not have stopped Iran from developing a nuclear weapon, that they would have happily lobbed into Israel, Russia would then feel empowered to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine and China would have had no fear invading Taiwan, hence World War 3. Please give me an alternative scenario under a Harris presidency
How so? She was completely controlled by the military industrial complex Her state department would be more concerned about morality than peace. She can’t speak a normal sentence, how could she negotiate with world leaders
I had this exact conversation with my mom earlier this week. It was crazy 1) how uninformed she actually is on much of this stuff and 2) how strongly she rejected my attempts to give her the facts. They literally don’t want to know. They want to support him loyally and hearing objective truths makes them defensive. It’s as fascinating as it is frustrating that they literally cannot hear any of this. 😔
Very well said. There’s a sense of hopelessness right now. I have family members and friends who are loyal to the orange one. It saddens me because they absolutely cannot see the wrong he is doing, and if they do, they make such excuse after excuses for it.
It’s just best to keep my distance from them. I’m not cutting ties, I’m just not making an effort to go out of my way to spend any time with people that do not have compassion for their fellow human beings. One thing that the current administration has done is make the bigotry in people come out and show their true colors as humans. AND the price of eggs still hasn’t come down.
My husband voted for the orange idiot. To say life in our house has been difficult is an extreme under statement. He is currently gone for six weeks, and instead of feeling the peace that encompasses the house, I feel lonely.
I understand, completely, your thoughts regarding cutting ties. It’s tough when loved ones are at the opposite end of a situation.
It’s impossible to understand why they can’t see the urgency of the situation. Part of my husband’s issue is the company he keeps. All of the people that he surrounds himself with are pro orange. Even when I think he’s starting to see the mess the country is in, all it takes is a few hours with his buddies and here we go again. Also, it took me 36 years to figure out that my husband was born without an empathetic bone in his body. It’s just the way it is. He is not capable of putting himself into anybody else’s shoes.
And his response when I try to get him to see why tRump is so bad, is to tell me, “they’re all crooks”
I totally understand. My oldest son is also rump loyalist. I think I’m finally getting through to him. Faux news and untruths social are detrimental propaganda issues. It’s brainwashing. 101. My husband used to be on the rump train, but finally boarded. Instead of arguing a point, I would just ask simple questions such as, “ why do you support him?”. Once I got my answer, then I could debunk it. Good luck 🍀
I’m thinking a billionaire could hire an ad agency to get this seen everywhere. The horror of what is going on gets us a lot of heroic actions, like this, and as we are being destroyed we also are being awakened. That includes to the rot that preceded Trump, where he may have saved us by being so destructive that we are forced to deal with putting ourselves back together and we get real about things like overshoot. Plus, as with Hitler, evil we need to get past is embodied so it can be seen and hopefully transcended as in “never again” for another round.
To our friends and family south of the border. What is happening in the country is a complete and utter disaster, some call it a complete failure.
Government and governing is not perfect, it never has been.
The U.S.A. is a great country, it is not perfect. Perfect is something you can work towards. Things in general with the last administration were good but they needed to improve.
People voted Donald Trump as President 4 years ago and you witnessed, his actions and his poor decision reflected in what happened on his watch.
Some American citizens, so many:
Lost their jobs and the ability to pay bills.
Lost their health benefits to stay healthy.
Lost their savings for the future.
Lost their homes were they grew up.
Lost their dreams of something better.
Lost their family members to Covid which could have been prevented.

Well written. I feel the exact same way and often have the same internal questions.

Thank you for this compliment, Sheila. It inspires me to continue.

The answer is very simple, Harris would have ushered in World War III
How so? One liners like yours could use more explanation.
It's pretty simple. Harris would have made the USA a better place for EVERYONE, including Trump-voters, and kept the peace around the globe.
How so? She was completely controlled by the military industrial complex Her state department would be more concerned about morality than peace. She can’t speak a normal sentence, how could she negotiate with world leaders
Thanks for sharing your thought process with two slightly differing posts, David G
How so? She was bought and paid for by the military industrial complex just like every other elected official

My mom is similar, Michelle. It’s incredibly hard, and I hear you. Sending love.
You are not alone. I’ve had reactions like that from someone I love, too. Very difficult, to say the least.

“Deboarded”
Thank you. Thank you for putting the thoughts in me, and many others’ heads into competent, intelligent words. I’m sharing this to my Facebook.
What an incredible well written WHOLE TRUTH. I wish I could get people in my circle that are republican to read this and talk. 😩🥴
Thank you for eloquently stated what I have been trying to put into words.
Nicely written.
I love this post. Do you mind if I share it on Facebook? I’m also struggling with this issue.
Yes, of course! Glad the piece resonated with you and appreciate the comment.
Thank you. Absolutely perfectly said.

This is one of the most articulate, well written pieces I have ever seen to combat GOP hypocrisy. Amen.
Agreed! I’ll be sharing this!
It is very difficult, to say the least. Thank you for putting feelings into words. It’s encouraging to know I’m not alone.
You are not alone, not even close ❤️
